Assignment of Tasks

For their application of measuring an ionising radiation field, the project partner SL requires a device that can move a field strength measurement device across a two-dimensional grid.
A linear-motion bearing using stepper motors is provided by SL.
For this to work, a motor controlling software must be developed that can, using a command-line interface, drive the motor to any point in the bearing.

Implementation

The electronic system was integrated on one main PCB.
The key components of said system, such as motor control, limit switch actuation detection via comparators, and communication with the end device, were tested in great detail before the initial operation.
The behaviour of the motors depending on various parameters were examined at certain operating points and thus optimal operation was achieved.

Result

A setup was developed which meets the requirements of the cooperation partner.
It is possible to move the field strength measurement device within a two-dimensional grid with an accuracy of ±1 mm.
Additional functionalities that exceed the original requirements were implemented which improve the security and accuracy of the system.
A communication with said system was implemented according to a defined command protocol.
