Diploma Thesis

Assignment

For their application of measuring an ionising radiation field, the project partner SL required a device that can move a field strength measurement device across a two-dimensional grid. A linear-motion bearing using stepper motors was provided by SL. A motor controlling software had to be developed that can, using a command-line interface, drive the motor to any point in the bearing.

Implementation

The electronic system was integrated on one main PCB. Key components — motor control, limit switch detection via comparators, and host communication — were designed, implemented, and thoroughly validated before initial operation. Motor behavior was analyzed across various parameters and operating points to achieve optimal performance.

Result

The final setup met all requirements of the cooperation partner. The field strength measurement device can be positioned within a two-dimensional grid with an accuracy of ±1 mm. Additional safety and calibration features were implemented beyond the original scope. Communication follows a defined command protocol for reproducibility and integration.
